Burglar alarms conjure pictures of red bells and clappers; heavy relays on doors and windows. This was the picture of burglar alarms in the movies of the '50's. These were cumbersome, easy to spot and even easier to defeat security devices. It has been a long time since anything like this has been seen in home burglar alarms, at least thirty years.
THE MODERN HOME SECURITY SYSTEM
The alarm burglar system, which constitutes the modern home security system, is composed of entirely passive modes. An active mode would be if you had a paralysis ray that froze the burglar in place until the police arrived. Preferably, the burglar would have one of your personal belongings in hand and there would be both Polaroid snapshots and camcorder video as well. I am sure that the insurance companies and the families of the burglars have petitioned the many burglar alarm system manufacturers to avoid such an aggressive solution.
Fortunately, the passive nature of 21 st Century electronics can aid in the arrest and capture of criminals and hinder the increase of their crimes by intimidation. The greatest deterrent of all burglar alarm systems is the small 3"x5" sticker that is prominently displayed on the windows of the protected homes, "This home is protected by..."
The newest home burglar alarm systems prevent surreptitious entry through doors and windows by forced entry. They even prevent attempted prying of entryways by detecting pressure and vibration when turned on. There are other systems using low powered continuous wave radar to detect and set off alarms when people come too close to windows and points of entry. Additional laser systems and visual light surveillance can also passively prevent undesired home evasion.
THE ROLE OF THE WIRELESS BURGLAR ALARM
A prominent security vendor offers a free wireless burglar alarm as promotion for the installation of their standard home security system. The free wireless burglar alarm is a cellular phone connected into the infrared motion detectors, the closed circuit entry alarms. It functions as a remote and as a secondary means of communication to the monitoring security agency. The wireless burglar alarm is free when it is installed with the standard home security system. This package costs approximately $129 for installation and requires a year subscription to the security agency monitoring service. Today's home burglar alarm uses three methods of communicating the status of the secured home. It employs a small fiber optic network to communicate the information derived from a host of remote sensors. These remote sensors are the security cameras, the infrared motion detectors, the low powered radar intrusion devices, fire and carbon monoxide detectors, which are processed within the home, based security computer. The information is sent from the computer through several means; it is sent from the computer through a wireless router, which connects with the wireless alarm remote and simultaneously sends the information through the cable company coaxial connection. The fiber optic information from the burglar alarm is processed and transmitted from the computer, which acts as a MUX (transmitter-receiver multiplexer). The third form of communication is a wire telephonic connection, which functions as an emergency backup.
